The monuments in Oklahoma City take you back to the glorious past of the city. They’re a peep into the past, the triumphs and tribulations that have shaped the city into what it is today.

The Victorian-style Henry Overholser Mansion is one of them. Built in 1903 for Henry Overholser, Antwerp oak paneling and French stained glass windows are some of the highlights of the mansion.

Commemorating a tragic event, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is a 3.3-acre memorial remembering the deceased, injured and emotionally affected victims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995 by Timothy McVeigh. The memorial and museum are located at the site of the destroyed and later demolished building. Over half a million people visit the Memorial every year. It’s impressive and contains many architectural attractions.

The Oklahoma State Capitol is a neo-Classical building. Though completed in 1917, the dome was only added 85 years later in the present century. The interior of the dome is the most impressive, while on top of the dome is the statue of an American Indian by Enoch Kelly Haney, called ‘The Guardian’.

The Centennial Plaza is located next to the State Capitol, and houses the monument that pays tribute to Native Americans in a state with the largest American Indian population in the United States. The forced relocation to which many American Indians were subjected is remembered in the title of the statue, “As Long as the Water Flows”.

The most impressive of all monuments in Oklahoma City, though, is still under construction. The Centennial Land Run Monument, when completed in 2015, would commemorate the opening of Indian land in the Oklahoma Territory to settlement by homesteaders in 1889. The monument, 19 figures of which have been completed, contains truly impressive bronze sculptures of riders and their horses, covered wagons, buckboard, and other vehicles, frozen in motion, racing on to claim their land. The sculptures are on either side of the Bricktown Canal in lower Bricktown.

The monuments in Oklahoma City are certainly worth watching and should be part of any OKC vacation itinerary. Hotels in Oklahoma City offer shuttle services to the important destinations and also pamper you with hospitality.

If you’re relocating to Oklahoma City, you may feel a little overwhelmed as you start looking for housing. This is a sprawling city with housing options available. Because Oklahoma City is so large, determining the best areas to rent apartments in Oklahoma City can be a little tricky. With only city bus lines for public transportation, you may want to limit your search to areas near your office. Oklahoma City apartment rentals can be sorted by location. Some of the best areas to explore are listed below.

The center of the action is in Bricktown/Downtown. Bricktown is a renovation program that has been going on for years. Set along the banks of the North Canadian River, Bricktown is an eclectic mix of ethnic restaurants, chic boutiques, and exciting night spots. Residents can often be seen boating, running, and biking along the river’s edge. The Civic Center, Museum of Art, and Ford Sports Stadium are all within just a few miles of Downtown. Apartments here range from spacious lofts to new high rise units with spectacular views of the city skyline.

Edmond – this is one of the areas with a lot to offer. Edmond is northwest of the city and offers a mix of country and city living. Just 10 miles from city center-residents can enjoy water sports, hiking, camping, and fishing at Arcadia Lake. Other recreational areas like Pelican Bay Aquatic Park, Lake Overholser, and the Lincoln Park Zoo are all in close proximity. The schools in Edmond are among the best in the city area, and several have received national recognition for educational excellence. Apartments in the area are often well landscaped with large expanses of lawn and trees; average rent prices range from $700 – $1000 a month.

Midwest City is home to Tinker Air Force Base, the largest employer in Oklahoma. Just a short drive to the junction of I-35 and I-40, Midwest City is conveniently situated about midway between Oklahoma City center, and Norman. Cattleman’s Café, one of the best steak houses in America, is located nearby; their meat is as fresh and fabulous as it gets. Apartments here are a little older and more urban in design than in other areas of the city.

Norman is south of the city, and home to the University of Oklahoma Sooners. If you settle here, you’re bound to get pulled into the excitement of the annual football rivalry between OU and Texas. Apartments in this area, as you might imagine, are often cater to the university set. Units here tend to be newer than those offered in Midwest City, and rents are in the $800 – $1200 range. Amenities like pools, parking, and fitness facilities are the norm.

If you like loft living, East Village is a recently renovated urban area with great lofts above many of the shops and restaurants that abound in the area. East Village has lots to do in a concentrated area making it easy to walk most anywhere you want to go.

As you will be able to see, a variety of neighborhoods and environments are available for your selection. The best apartments to rent in Oklahoma City can be found looking through your set of particular priorities.

Downtown Oklahoma City has gone through an amazing metamorphosis that has been decades in the making. Like many urban areas, it had been in a slow decline over the years until a handful of grassroots visionaries took on the challenge of rebuilding downtown in the early 1990s. In 1995, the Morrow Building bombing brought national attention to the downtown area, its stalwart citizens, and the sense of community and camaraderie the local residents exhibited has made this a neighborhood of choice in the aftermath of tragedy.

As people move to the city, they are amazed at the availability of appealing Oklahoma City apartments. The young, professional set seems to be drawn to the revitalized downtown area, and the exciting lifestyle it offers its citizens. Even though the city is safer than ever, having a little guidance when you’re looking at Oklahoma City apartment rentals can be a big help. The right realtor or apartment locator can help you make sure you choose the best downtown apartment in Oklahoma City.

An area like Deep Deuce with its modern loft apartments well within walking distance of the historical Bricktown redevelopment area is very attractive to younger renters. This area is alive with entertainment venues, a botanical garden, and a multitude of sports activities linked to the canal and the North Canadian River. Downtown neighborhoods also consist of The Arts District and Film Row.

Families, too, are drawn to downtown not only for the arts and cultural opportunities that abound, but also because religious facilities for many denominations are within walking distance of downtown, and both public and private schools are located close by. The philharmonic, the civic center-with it’s widely diverse offerings of ballet, concerts, and stage shows-and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art are the heart of the arts district, and are surrounded by more varieties of restaurants and shops than you can count making this diverse neighborhood appealing for all ages. Sycamore Square is a beautiful apartment complex across from the museum. The park-like exterior of the complex makes it a wonderful natural haven in the center of the city. The units are large, most with more than 1200 sq. ft. of living space. The trolley line has a stop just a short block away from the unit giving residents easy access to Bricktown, the Cox Convention Center, and the Ford Sports Center.

The newly renovated Montgomery in downtown Oklahoma City is actually the old Montgomery Wards store. It has been revamped in classic art-deco style and now houses some of the most upscale apartments in town. The units all have the large windows, 14-foot ceilings, and exposed brick and hardwoods inherent to these old buildings. It has amenities like a world-class fitness room, a pool, and expansive views of the city and the river.

The best that Oklahoma City has to offer is waiting for you downtown, all it takes to find the apartment that fits your personality is a little research. Take a look at downtown, and it will take your heart.

Bingo is a fun, family-oriented game which continues to grow in popularity throughout the world. It is a game of chance, and randomly-drawn numbers are matched to the same numbers appearing on a bingo card. The winner is the first player to have the drawn numbers form a specified pattern on their card (lines can be made horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). When this happens, the player yells out, “Bingo!” to inform others of their win.

In many countries, Bingo is used as a form of legalized gambling. In the United States, numerous bingo halls are available to play at, and states like Oklahoma often locate these facilities next to more traditional casinos.

If you happen to find yourself in Oklahoma, you should certainly visit one of their many bingo halls and play a few games. The action is fast-paced, and all sorts of great prizes are up for grabs (including money and cars at some of the larger facilities). In fact, I’ve complied a short list of some of the better places to play in the state.

Okemah, Oklahoma – Located in Central Oklahoma, Okemah is the county seat of Okfuskee County. It is the birthplace of folk music legend Woody Guthrie (if you visit in July, be sure to check out the festival dedicated to his memory). In the Indian language, the word Okemah means “things up high.” And if you’re not in a hurry, you might also want to check out Lake Okemah, which is one of the most well-managed lakes in the state (and since Oklahoma is “America’s Frontier Lake State,” that’s really saying something).

There are three major centers for bingo in the city. The first is Okemah Bingo and Casino, located at 1100 South Woody Guthrie Street. Second, there’s The Okemah Gaming Center, which offers a variety of slot machines as well as bingo. It can be found just off of Interstate 40. Speaking of Interstate 40, that’s where the third facility can also be found. It’s called the Thlopthlocco Tribal Town Casino, and it’s just off of Exit 227.

Concho, Oklahoma – A rural unincorporated community, Concho is in Canadian County and can be found just north of the Concho Indian School. While there’s not much to see in the small community of Concho, there’s some excellent bingo and gambling to be found at the Lucky Star Casino, located on 7777 North Highway 81.

Turpin, Oklahoma – Another small community which offers excellent bingo opportunities, Turpin is located in Beaver County. While there’s not much in the way of shopping or dining, fans of history may be interested in the Turpin Grain Elevator which is included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Bingo is available at State Line Bingo, which is located on Highway 83 South. Games are available every Tuesday through Saturday starting at 5:30 pm.

Haileyville, Oklahoma – Located in Pittsburg County, Haileyville has a population of around 900. Be careful when traveling to the bingo hall, however, as the town’s main source of income comes from speeding fines.

In actuality, this community doesn’t have an actual bingo hall. Instead, games are held at the Haileyville Fire Department, which is located at 110 Main Street. This may sound a bit odd, but it’s perfect for those who want to make new friends and sample of slice of small-town life.

Oklahoma City is a very popular destination for business and leisure travelers. The city has many tourist attractions that are a combination of the “Old West” roots of the place and exciting modern attractions. Oklahoma City is also a very popular convention and trade show site. The Cox Convention Center which is very near the Bricktown Historical District is a very popular setting for big trade fairs, conventions and other special events.

It opened in 1910 as an upscale office building and is one of the few buildings that still remain after the city’s urban renewal program. This hotel opened in 2006 after extensive renovations of the building.

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic has risen from the ashes of the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra that was founded way back in 1938. The Oklahoma Symphony was conducted most prominently by three men, Ralph Rose in 1938, and later Victor Alessandro and Guy Francis Harrison in the decades to follow. During this period, the Oklahoma Symphony rose in popularity both at the national and international levels, mainly due to radio broadcasts on the Voice of America and the Mutual Radio Network.

Following the disbanding of the orchestra in 1988, Joel Levine, through the co-operation of other city leaders and funds from five Oklahoma-based corporations, set up the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. Levine is now the conductor and music director of the OKC Philharmonic, leading it to become the largest organization of performing arts in the State of Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic performs from September to May, and features the Discovery Family Concert Series and the Classical and Pops series. Holiday concerts and outreach concerts are also conducted. Through its performances, the OKC Philharmonic, that celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2008, serves to create a positive influence in the community by enhancing its cultural life and encouraging the appreciation for orchestral music, thereby contributing to the community’s growth and betterment through cooperation with other agencies of art.

The Oklahoma City Orchestra League’s volunteers support the OKC Philharmonic financially, and also conduct educational outreach programs. The OKC Philharmonic has a host of programs lined up for the 2009-2010 seasons that would take the citizens of OKC on a great musical journey. Guests of OKC hotels who happen to be in the city at the time can also check out these concerts (advance booking required) held by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, chiefly at the Civic Center Music Hall in OKC.

The Oklahoma State Fair Arena, Oklahoma City is a multi-purpose arena located on the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. Also called “The Big House”, the arena can accommodate 10,944 people and is the third largest multipurpose arena owned by Oklahoma City after the Ford Center and the Cox Convention Center arena.
The Big House in OKC was home to the Central Hockey League franchise, the Oklahoma City Blazers, from 1965 to 1977, and has also played host to the state high school basketball playoffs. The Oklahoma State Fairgrounds now hosts equine events, rodeos and horse-shows, while both the State Fairgrounds and the Big House serve as backup facilities for sporting events and concerts.

Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park (OSP) is a live classical theater in downtown Oklahoma City, the brainchild of Kathryn McGill and Jack J. O’Meara. The theater generally performs in different locations. The summer season performances are staged at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage while in the fall and winter, performances are staged at the Stage Center. The Mitchell Hall in the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, Oklahoma also becomes a venue occasionally. Larry Alley serves as President while co-founder Kathryn McGill is the Artistic Director.

Founded in 1985 in Edmond, Oklahoma, as an outdoor summer Shakespeare festival, the theater began performing at the small stage available in Hefer Park. The theater’s first productions were Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” both of which were staged with the help of a grant of $500 from the Oklahoma Arts Council to add to the financing from McGill and O’Meara themselves. Both plays were extremely successful, running for 5 weeks each for a season of 10 weeks in July and August, 1985. 6000 people in total were enchanted by the performances.

The initial success was a sign of things to come. The theater went through certain milestones in its history such as its incorporation in 1986, admissions being charged from 1988 onwards, and the theater moving to Oklahoma City in December 2006. From June 14 to September 1, 2007, the theater staged “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Cyrano de Bergerac” and “Macbeth” at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage. The Stage Center witnessed the special Centennial production of “The Grapes of Wrath” in November, and “The Scarlet Letter” in January 2008. A year later in January 2009, the theater staged “Julius Caesar” at Stage Center.

The presence of Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park in Oklahoma City is sure to enrich the city’s well-known cultural heritage. Vacationers could experience a mystical evening at an OSP performance and spend the night in a brilliant Oklahoma City hotel.
